Nike Kobe X Em Protro Blue Lagoon: the 5am leap that became legend

Released in 2015, the Kobe X was Kobe Bryant's tenth signature shoe with Nike. Its Blue Lagoon colourway, nicknamed "5AM Flight", tells the story of a defining moment: in August 2013, while rehabbing from a torn Achilles tendon, Kobe jumped off a high dive of roughly 40 feet at five in the morning to prove to himself he was ready to come back. Nike's Protro programme, a blend of "performance" and "retro", now brings the model up to speed for the modern game.

The "Em" in its name refers to Engineered Mesh, a breathable, flexible upper that locks the foot in during lateral movements. Underfoot, the Protro swaps the original set-up for a full-length Air Zoom Strobel stitched directly to the upper, paired with Cushlon 3.0 foam for a more responsive ride. The translucent blue outsole reveals the tech inside, while the black Swoosh, red stitching on the heel recalling Kobe's surgery and the low-cut collar complete a design full of meaning.

On court, these men's basketball trainers deliver court feel, grip and freedom of movement at the ankle. Off court, the vivid lagoon blue becomes the statement piece of a pared-back outfit: black basketball shorts, technical joggers or raw denim with a white tee.
