Autry Medalist Low "Suede Black": a play on leather, suede and a black heel

When Italian entrepreneur Alberto Raengo revived Autry in 2019, he had a strong past to build on: a brand founded in Dallas in 1982 by Jim Autry, which made its name in tennis, running and aerobics. The new team put the Medalist front and centre, a tennis shoe praised by Tennis Magazine in 1985, and turned it into a playground for materials. The Medalist Low "Suede Black" sums up that approach: an 80s court silhouette with an upper built on contrasting textures.

The upper is made from 70% cow leather, 20% suede and 10% nylon. Smooth white leather forms the base, reinforced by soft beige suede overlays that give the shoe its structure. At the back, a black leather heel tab stamped with the Autry logo adds the dark accent that defines the model. All the Medalist details are there: micro-perforated toe, padded collar, flat cotton laces, embroidered tongue label, leather and cotton terry lining, a 2 cm raised leather insole and a 2.5 to 3.5 cm rubber sole.

That leather and suede mix makes the Suede Black a proper city trainer. Pair it with charcoal suit trousers and a white shirt to relax an office look, or with raw denim, a navy peacoat and a wool scarf for autumn. The black heel also lets it slot into darker outfits, from cargo trousers to a black hoodie.
