Air Jordan 3: the sneaker that changed everything in 1988

In 1988, the partnership between Michael Jordan and Nike was on shaky ground: designer Peter Moore had left the brand and MJ was seriously considering a move. Tinker Hatfield, an architect by training, took over and built the shoe around what Jordan wanted: a mid-cut, soft leather and a far more premium look than its predecessors. It worked, and Jordan stayed with Nike. That same season he won the Slam Dunk Contest in Chicago with his leap from the free-throw line, wearing the White Cement, and was named MVP.

Elephant print, visible Air and Jumpman: the AJ3 DNA

Three details give the Air Jordan 3 its identity. First, the visible Air unit in the heel, a first for the Jordan line. Second, the famous elephant print, the grey and black textured leather on the toe and heel. Third, the Jumpman logo, which appeared on the tongue for the first time and went on to become the emblem of the whole Jordan brand. Add a soft leather mid-cut upper and Nike Air branding on the heel of OG versions, and you get a silhouette recognised instantly.
